The GNU General Public License, also known as GNU GPL or just GPL, is a popular free software license. Most bots are licensed under this license.

The GPL is an example of a strong copyleft license, which provides users with the freedom to share and modify the work, but also aims to sustain this freedom by requiring derived works to be licensed under the same copyleft.

This is in distinction to permissive free software licences (of which the BSD and MIT licenses are the standard examples), which do not require derivative works to be licensed under the same license.
